Christmas (Part One)

We switch off holidays with each side of the family, Ralph's family getting us for Christmas this year, my family getting us for New Year's. So here is coverage from 'Christmas Part 1'. We will have Christmas Part 2 in a few days with Grandma & Grandpa Valentine. How fun that Christmas gets to last for a few days, rather than just one!

Christmas Picture Outtakes

There's an old Hollywood saying: "Never work with children or animals." And W. C. Fields knew what he was talking about - kids and pets are completely unpredictable and no matter how hard you try, they are just gonna do their own thing. I recently found this out the hard way while trying to get a good picture of Jake and Ruth, together and in the same frame, for our Christmas card.

Ralph had to come over to see my monitor because I was just laughing so hard at these outtakes. I thought you might enjoy seeing what all the hilarity is all about... The faces Ruth makes are priceless!!!!

I'm just going to pet you nicely....

Oh, look - an ear!

Gotcha!

First I will nibble on you...

...and then I will steal your antlers!

Why should we wear them when I would much rather just play with them?

Santa Baby!

Mema Mary took this picture a while back, but I was saving it for closer to Christmastime.

It's been a while...

Sorry for the lack of updates - I am sure you all are have been as busy as I have been with the holidays. Jake has been plauged with another bad episode of coughing and wheezing and sneezing and a seriously runny nose. Poor baby. I've got to find a way to get him out of that stupid daycare. I still have not found a good local situation. Jake was a mess on friday - I thought his medicine was helping, but it made him seriously constipated. He was extremely clingy and was in a lot of pain. Lots of crying, lots of straining, and lots of hard yucky diapers. I felt so bad for him.

So we had some cool milestones lately - Jake has learned how to clap and loves to do it. But it's funny because he sometimes claps when he is mad and crying! I had him on the changing table and he was crying his little heart out, but still clapping. Poor thing!

He also learned how to go from laying down to sitting up, and from sitting up to laying down. He goes back and forth all the time. He crawls around in this funny combination of rolling, sitting, laying back down, doing a military crawl, rolling some more, then getting up on his knees and hands (belly off the floor), and then sliding back down on his belly. Very funny to watch, but he gets around very quickly, making us scramble to try to get our house in some form of baby-proofed. He still refuses to use his legs. He doesn't want to stand, and doesn't even like to try to use his legs to bounce himself in the Jumperoo. I think if he realized he could make himself jump he'd love it. We've tried to show him how to do it, but he doesn't quite get it so far.

He is still refusing to take baby food from a spoon, but he will take anything I give him in a bottle. He's also eating Wagon Wheels - and by eating them, I mean he licks them, bites them, chews on them, mashed them around in his mouth, and then either spits them out or gags on them. I think he may have an over-active gag reflex. I took it as a good sign the other day that he wanted to eat some food directly from my fingers. usually, he wants to be the only one putting food in his mouth - whether that be a bottle, wagon wheels, fruity puffs or whatever. He doesn't trust anyone putting anything in his mouth. But he leaned over yesterday, eager to eat a fruity puff from my fingers! I was thrilled! Covered with slobber...but thrilled.

He also has gotten a bad case of seperation anxiety. If I so much as leave the room to grab his bottle, he is hysterical. It's a little trying at the moment... but I know he is just doing it because he loves us.

He is still SUCH a great boy out in public. We had him out with us Christmas shopping last week - he was sick, had gotten up early, we kept him out late, he hadn't eaten in hours, had a wet diaper - and he was STILL a perfect angel for hours and hours while we shopped. He's amazing. He just loves to people watch and to look around, and he is sooooo well behaved in public. He lasted an entire three hours in a very nice restaurant last night while we had the Valentine annual family holiday dinner. He was such a good boy - no whining, no crying, no complaining - nothing! We are so lucky that we can bring such a young baby out to a fancy restaurant and be confident that he will not cause a scene.

Okay, I've chatted your ear off... I am sure you have tons of presents to wrap, shopping to do, trees to trim, cookies to bake, and cards to send. Thanks (as always) for reading - look forward to the Christmas card picture outtakes coming soon!!!

(FINALLY) Feeling better

So Jake is finally back to his old self again (with the exception of a cough), and we couldn't be more relieved. He started feeling better on friday. Mema Mary came in to give us some relief and some help (and to see her favorite grandson too). We were very glad to see her, and Uncle Chris who arrived last night on his way back to NY from Elon.

Here is a picture that Uncle Chris took with his camera phone when we all went out to lunch. Check out Jake's hairdo. He was trying to get his hair to look cool like his Uncle Chris. tee hee

Jake was so good when we were out at lunch (in his big-boy booster chair thingie), and at the mall -- he was a perfect angel all day long!! I keep telling Ralph there is no way our next child will be as well-behaved, so we should just close up shop now. Chris commented that we set the bar too high for any future grandchildren. HA!

P.S. - Uncle Danny can thank Jake for his Eagles win today - I dressed Jake in his McNabb jersey (under his jean jacket in pic above) as a joke for Ralph and Uncle Chris (Giants fans). They even let him wear it in public! We are in Eagles Country here, so many Delawareans complimented Jake on his choice attire. E-A-G-L-E-S! EAGLES!

Hilarious series of cell phone pics

Jake didn't have a great day at daycare (still sick poor thing!), so mommy and daddy had to come get him and take him home. Daddy is working from home, so he is on daycare duty for the rest of the day.

Ralph sent me this adorable cell phone picture of Jake, presumably having just drifted off after a nice bottle...

Sick and tired...

So this weekend was supposed to be my office holiday party, which we were really looking forward to, since I have been working like crazy lately (12 hour shifts for 3 days in a row to meet deadline on the big annual catalog). So we went to the mall Saturday afternoon so I could pick out a cute outfit to wear to all the holiday parties this season, and I was feeling a little nauseous as we shopped, and then all of the sudden I....just....felt...like...C R A P . I sent Ralph to go get the car, and headed right home to the couch, where I stayed for the next day and a half, shivering under 2 blankets and a heating pad. Grandma Valentine was babysitting Jake...who also ended up getting sick, but with different symptoms - his were...ummm... messier. :( Not a fun weekend for anyone.

Hope everyone is doing better than we are in terms of getting ready for the holidays. We have done no shopping, no decorating, no baking, no card-making...nothing. Ugh. I am soooo beyond overwhelmed these days and the holidays are NOT helping. All I want for Christmas is another 8 hours in a day. I just have to keep reminding myself that it's Jake's first Christmas and I need to be excited for him...not like he will remember any of this, but the pictures will be adorable... :)
